The Columbia Turnpike Company, tasked with making certain turnpike roads in the District of Columbia, was created by an act of Congress, April 12, 1810. Three turnpikes were to be created: from the Capitol to Baltimore, along a route now followed by Bladensburg Road, N.E.; from the Capitol to Montgomery Courthouse (never constructed); and from the Capitol to the Southwest (Columbia Pike), “One road from the western extremity of the causeway leading from Alexander’s island to the boundary line of the District of Columbia, and the most direct and practicable route towards the Little River turnpike road, in the state of Virginia.”
The Columbia Turnpike met the Leesburg Turnpike at Bailey’s Crossing, VA.
