Smith, Grant, p.624 says: …it was not until late October [of 1885] that [Grant] consulted Dr. John H. Douglas, the leading specialist in New York. Douglas had served with the United States Sanitary Commission during the war and had met Grant shortly after Donelson. His admiration for the General was unbounded, and his examination was exceedly thorough. “Is it cancer?” asked Grant. Without using the word, Douglas indicated that it probably was. “General, he disease is serious, epithelial in character, and sometimes capable of being cured.”
