Tag: Hospital No. 6 - Joseph Johnson House (Beaufort SC)

MOLLUS collection incorrectly says: Beaufort, S.C. Hospital No. 11.

Beaufort Women’s History Tours website says: Joseph Johnson House, 411 Craven Street. Also known as “The Castle”, the Joseph Johnson House was used as an African American hospital (#6). The doctors wrote the patients names on the upstairs walls, many of which are still present. Esther Hawks taught the freedmen here once her husband was reassigned as medical officer to the SC colored troops. At the start of the Union occupation, the Johnsons placed valuables in the brick outbuilding that was used as a hospital morgue. The dead bodies concealed the valuables and were recovered by the Johnson family upon there return to pay back taxes.
