Beaufort Women’s History Walking Tour website says: Robert Smalls House, 511 Prince Street. This was the birthplace of Robert Smalls, former slave and hero of the civil war.  Smalls used the money he had earned from commandeering the “Planter” to purchase his boyhood home. Smalls was a strong supporter of women’s rights in addition to black civil rights.
