Gibson and Gibson, Dictionary of Transports and Combatant Vessels Steam and Sail Employed by the Union Army, 1861-1868 says: CANONICUS; sidewheel steamer; 416 tons; 420 tons. Chartered Mar 4-Oct 3, 1862, initially for support of Peninsular campaign. Purchased by the Quartermaster Department on Apr 12, 1863 at New York City for $50,000. Record indicates vessel was owned by the United States on Oct. 15, 1864. Was a troop transport on raid up the Broad River in Nov. 1864. One of 99 vessels engaged in the supply of Sherman’s army after it reached the sea at Savannah, Georgia, in Dec of 1864, and later during the Carolina campagn of early 1865.
