Gibson and Gibson, Dictionary of Transports and Combatant Vessels Steam and Sail Employed by the Union Army, 1861-1868 says: JOHN BROOKS; sidewheel steamer; 780 tons; 800 tons. Chartered Mar 6-Sept 20, 1862; Dec 16, 1862-Aug 8, 1865. Was reported to be at Bermuda Hundred in June of 1864, engaged either in troop lift of as supply vessel. Served as Army mail streamer to City Point, Virginia, in summer of 1864; also carried troops.
