Gibson and Gibson, Dictionary of Transports and Combatant Vessels Steam and Sail Employed by the Union Army, 1861-1868 says: Tigress; steamer; tonnage unknown. Expedition to Pittsburg Landing – Shiloh, Apr 1862. Note on Hurst list states, “This small, fast side-wheel vessel served as General Grant’s flag ship.” (Hurst references ORN, I, 24, p. 604.) On Aug 22, 1862, she was sunk while running the batteries at Vicksburg. Her regular civilian crew, except for one civilian pilot, had been replaced for the run by Army officers and enlisted men. Included in list of vessels lost of destroyed while in the service of the United States and paid for through the office of the Third auditor, not included in accompanying list of chartered vessels. Was probably pressed for the final service. Government paid $22,500.
