Gibson and Gibson, Dictionary of Transports and Combatant Vessels Steam and Sail Employed by the Union Army, 1861-1868 says: AMERICA; steamer; 822 tons. Chartered Aug 8-Sept 30, 1863; Oct 10-Dec 311, 1863; Jan 1, 1864-May 3 1865. One of ten transports sent from the Army of the James at City Point in Nov of 1864 with a provisional division of troops bound to New York, their mission being to contain threats of civil unrest on the eve of the presidential elections and to guard against the threat of Confederate raiders coming out of Canada. Reported as being in New Orleans, en route to Mobile with troops in Aug of 1864.
