Hochadel, Abraham’s Engines says: US Military Railroads built. 4-4-0. 1865.05 Built as USMRR Div. of the Gulf engine “Col. Holabird” at the New Orleans Opelousas & Great Western RR’s Algiers shops. 1866.02.01 Turned over to the NOO&GW and renamed “W. G Hewes.”
Abdill, Civil War Railroads says: While the Union forces were in control of Louisiana, the shops of the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Railroad turned out this 4-4-0 woodburner, erected under the supervision of the U.S. Quarter Master Department. The engine was named the COL. HOLABIRD.
Probably named for Brevet Brigadier General Samuel B. Holabird, chief quartermaster of the Union Department of the Gulf, succeeding General Ingalls.
