Haupt, United States Military Railway Department. Construction And Transportation. No. 23. This view is taken from the top of a car on the extreme end of the Burnside wharf looking towards shore. The railroad on crib work is seen along the edge of the bank, which is a marly material completely filled with shells. The railroad was constructed in the water to avoid slides.
This wharf and the extensive improvements at Aquia Creek were constructed chiefly under the supervision of Wm. W. Wright, the efficient engineer and superintendent of the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad, and has been found of much service in supplying the Army of the Potomac.
