No. 53–A successful attempt to bend and break rails is shown in No. 53. A rail was placed parallel to and in contact with, one of the rails of the track; three spikes were then driven about three feet from the end to serve as a fulcrum; ten men carried the rail around, bending it at the place where it was spiked, and finally breaking it at that point.
