No. 54–A similar experiment is represented in Plate No. 54. In this case instead of the spikes, a chain was passed around the rails at about three feet from the end of the loose rail experimented upon. A horse was attached to the other end, who doubled the rail ingot the shape of the letter U without difficulty.
On the opposite track, in Plate 54, a joint is shown, raised from the tied by driving wedges under the chair.
