Haupt, United States Military Railway Department. Construction And Transportation. No. 55.
Haupt, Photographs Illustrative of Operations In Construction And Transportation, As Used To Facilitate The Movements Of The Armies Of The Rappahannock, Of Virginia, And Of The Potomac, Including Experiments Made To Determine The Most Practical and Expeditious Modes To Be Resorted To In The Construction, Destruction and Reconstruction Of Roads And Bridges. No. 55–Another plan, which was used successfully for bending and breaking tails cold, is represented in Plate 55. It consisted of boring a hole in a tree, inserting a stout iron pin nearly two inches in diameter, passing a log chain over the pin, placing the end of the rail in a loop of chain, and pulling on the other end. In this case the rail was of the T pattern, short and stiff, and required two horses to break it.
