Haupt, United States Military Railway Department. Construction And Transportation. No. 64.
Haupt, Photographs Illustrative of Operations In Construction And Transportation, As Used To Facilitate The Movements Of The Armies Of The Rappahannock, Of Virginia, And Of The Potomac, Including Experiments Made To Determine The Most Practical and Expeditious Modes To Be Resorted To In The Construction, Destruction and Reconstruction Of Roads And Bridges. No. 64–Sometimes the rails would be bent in the direction of the plane of the vertical rib, and be too stiff to straighten by simple pressure. In this case the rail was raised to the height of the head, and allowed to fall on a cross-tie at the words of command, “ready,” “drop;” once or twice dropping did not fail to take out the vertical bend. See No. 64.
