Haupt, United States Military Railway Department. Construction And Transportation. No. 65.
Haupt, Photographs Illustrative of Operations In Construction And Transportation, As Used To Facilitate The Movements Of The Armies Of The Rappahannock, Of Virginia, And Of The Potomac, Including Experiments Made To Determine The Most Practical and Expeditious Modes To Be Resorted To In The Construction, Destruction and Reconstruction Of Roads And Bridges. No. 65–Another mode of straightening, represented in No. 65, was used very successfully in straightening a large amount of bent iron at the Depot in Chambersburg. In this case, the power was applied by means of a rope attached to the end of the rail, the end of a short piece of rail forming a fulcrum. The picture sufficiently explains itself to render further description unnecessary. Two posts firmly planted in the ground, about 2 1/2 feet apart would be very convenient for straightening rails on this plan. The rail must be supported beyond the fulcrum, as shown in the picture, or a bend will be formed at this point.
