Russell, United States Military Railroad Photographic Album. No. 201. Residence of Mr. Hudson, headquarters of Gen. Pope during the battle of Cedar Mountain.
Library of Congress print includes a handwritten text by Herman Haupt detailing the sequence of events that brought him to the house: When General John Pope came into command with headquarters in the saddle he thought he could run the railroads without my assistance and notwithstanding the protest of General McDowell refused to recognize my position. I therefore returned to my home in Cambridge. In three weeks I was recalled by a telegram from the War Department. Come back at once, cannot get along without you, not a wheel moving on any of the roads. Popes attempt to manage had resulted in a general blockade. I returned immediately and found Pope and McDowell at the farm house of Mr. Hudson about 2 miles from Mitchell Station. Pope was very civil, told me I could dictate my own orders and directed his chief of staff, Col. Ruggles, to issue any orders that I might dictate. Trains were soon moving again, and in a couple of days the second battle of Bull Run commenced. For the services rendered in this battle I received [something-something] as Brigadier General. H.H.
