The sign over the buildings on the left reads “Cumberland Coal & Iron Comp.” It sits at the end of the Coal Wharf. Beyond it is the Steamboat Repair Wharf. The Georgetown & Alexandria Canal met the Potomac between the two wharves. Across the river is Maryland.
