Library of Congress says: Washington, D.C., Nov. 10, 1865. The execution of Captain Henry Wirtz. Group of newspaper correspondents.
Katz, Witness To An Era, p196 says: Correspondents covering the execution of Captain Wirz, November 10, 1865.. From the Washington Star, November 10, 1865; “Gardner was early on hand with his camera taking views of the prison yard, scaffold, and scene of execution for Harper’s Weekly… The press gang present, seated on some dilapidated steps were taken in characteristic outfit of shocking bad hats, pencils, notebooks, and the rush of the group to see the negative was immediately followed by a scatteration and rush in the direction of the scaffold as the prisoner was brought out somewhat sooner than had been anticipated by the crowd.”
