US Military Railroads locomotive “Dover” at Alexandria, Va.

Abdill, Civil War Railroads, p40: The U.S. Military Railroad engine DOVER was a 4-4-0 with outside frames and was acquired second-hand from the Boston & Maine Railroad. She was built by Hinkley & Drury in 1856, along with the EXETER; note the goose-neck coupling link hanging on the side of the tender. On August 27th, 1862, while running on the war-torn Orange & Alexandria Railroad, the DOVER was fired into by Confederates along the track a mile or two west of Burke’s Station.
