US Military Railroads locomotive C. Vibbard at Alexandria, Va.
Abdill, Civil War Railroads, p85: In March of 1864 the engine C. VIBBARD of the U.S. Military Railroad fell through a span of the Long Bridge over the Potomac River at Washington, D.C.; the locomotive was fished out of the river with blocks and tackle suspended from a wooden frame erected overhead at the site of her dunking. The C. VIBBARD, pictured here, was built by Baldwin in 1862 under Shop No. 1097.
