Abdill, Civil War Railroads, p118: A woodburner of the U.S. Military Railroads poses for her photo on the trestle over the Little River during the operations in North Carolina; coupled behind the locomotive is a primitive caboose lettered “Conductor’s Car No. 1” and nearing the initials of the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad. A water tank stands at the far end of the bridge over the stream, which furnished the water supply for the locomotives. Note the stacked muskets, with fixed bayonets in the foreground, evidence that the war was probably still in progress.
