Abdill, Civil War Railroads, p.123: This view… is reported to show the locomotive HOMER of the United States Military Railroads, a Mason-built eightwheeler. The engine was probably one of a number delivered to the Government after the shooting war had ended; orders had been placed for locomotives prior to the final surrender of the Confederate forces, and many of these engines were delivered to Manchester, Virginia, where they were stored and later sold. The mechanical forces pictured here may be engaged in assembling one of these engines after deliver from the Mason factory.
