Abdill, Civil War Railroads, p98: Some sources place [this photo] at Blackburn’s Ford, Virginia, but that locale appears on old maps at some distance from the Orange & Alexandria Railroad. The view was probably taken at White Oak Swamp on the line of the Richmond & York River Railroad about the time of the Seven Days’ Battle, when McClellan’s forces were retiring toward Malvern Hill. The United States Military Railroad controlled 20 miles of the railroad between White House Landing on the Pamunkey River and Fair Oaks Station and this portion of the line was abandoned after the collapse of the campaign in the region.
