Library of Congress says: View of cavalliere [i.e., cavalier] taken from Central Gap, Port Hudson, La. [Summary: Photograph shows fortification constructed of stacked barrels.]
MOLLUS Collection says: Port Hudson. Trench Cavalier. Looking down into the Priest cap or point of attack. It was nearly in line from Duryea’s Battery to the Priest Cap, and was made of four tiers of sugar hogsheads. The sap runs down from its right towards left of picture and so down to Cox’s Battery near which it begins, opening from a deep ravine.
