Naval History and Heritage Command says: Fort Fisher Operation, December 1864 January 1865 Ships of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron departing Hampton Roads, Virginia, en route to attack Fort Fisher, North Carolina, in December 1864. Among the ships present are a side-wheel cruiser (converted merchantman) at left, one steam frigate (in center) and several steam sloops and gunboats. The twin-turret monitor in the right center distance is probably USS Monadnock. USS New Ironsides is the next large ship to her right.
