No. 32. Fort Sumter Light House, Charleston, S. C. This picture gives a good view of the LIGHT HOUSE erected on the Northeast corner of the ruins of Fort Sumter, since the close of the war. The LIGHT HOUSE is only a temporary construction, having been erected to supply a want occasioned by the destruction of the permanent lights by the Confederates during the war, to facilitate blockade running. This view also gives a good idea of the general demolition which the Fort received. The sally-port of the Fort can also be seen, as it was nearly blocked up with the debris from the stone archway. The wood work, to be seen on the left, is the remains of a Palmetto wharf erected by the Confederates for the purpose of piling up sand bags to protect the walls from the fire of the Monitors. [S. T.
