Boston Athenaeum says: Major General Anthony Mower. Joseph Anthony Mower (1827-1870) grew up in Lowell, Mass., and began his military service in the Mexican War. During the Civil War he rose from Captain to Brevet Major-General under General William T. Sherman and commanded the XX Corps of the Carolinas at war’s end.
